A generic reclassification of the Afrotropical Bolboceratini (Coleoptera: Geotrupidae)

The generic classification of the Afrotropical Bolboceratini is discussed. Fourteen genera are recognized, five of them new: Bolboceratellus, Bolbodius, Bolboceratex, Namibiobolbus and Meridiobolbus. Microbolbus Vulcano et al. is synonymized with Mimobolbus Vulcano et al. Bolbaffroides and Bolboceratops are raised to generic rank. The genera are keyed, diagnosed, and their species are listed. Many new combinations are proposed, mainly for species hitherto combined with Bolboceras Kirby.

A revised key to the subfamilies, tribes and subtribes of the Cetoniidae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) is presented. Comments are given on the classification implied by the key, which includes several redefinitions. All the known genera (ca. 510) are listed under their tribe or subtribe, the position of several being different from that in Schenkling's catalogues (1921, 1922). References to recent synoptic literature are given. Eighteen new subtribes are proposed, the majority in the tribe Cremastocheilini. One new tribe is proposed, the Platygeniini. Attention is drawn to various new and neglected synonymies, original spellings, and other nomenclatural matters regarding family-group and genus-group names. Paxillus is a neotropical genus belonging to the subfamily Passalinae widespread from Mexico to Argentina. Brazil is known to harbor five species belonging to this genus with most of them presenting at head a flattened central tubercle lacking a free apex. However, one of these species, Paxillus macrocerus Reyes-Castillo & Fonseca, differs from that pattern by having a long central tubercle with a completely free apex. The present study describes and illustrates another new species, which has been found in the Brazilian Amazon, showing this same characteristic.

Synapsis cambeforti spec. nov. is described and, by means of of an annotated key, compared with its two Sundaland relatives, S. ritsemae Lansberge, 1874 (recorded from Java) and S. thoas Sharp, 1875 (recorded from Java and Sumatra). A revision is presented of the species in the genus Parastasia. All known species are described, 11 new species are established, the parameres of most species are figured, the taxonomic levels of several taxa are changed, and 21 new synonymies are proposed. For many taxa lectotypes are designated and many specimens bearing incorrect or dubious type labels are degraded to their true status. Some aspects of distribution and dispersal are shortly discussed. A tentative key and a check list are added.

Meiotic and mitotic chromosomes of Isocopris inhiata and Diabroctis mimas were studied by standard staining procedures, C-banding, silver nitrate staining and FISH using Apis mellifera 28S rDNA as probe. Isocopris inhiata presented a 2n = 18 (8II+ Xy p) karyotype, composed of meta-submetacentric chromosomes with gradual reduction in size. Em área de floresta primária da Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke, foi feito o levantamento da ocorrência de insetos da família Scolytidae (Coleoptera), utilizando-se as armadilhas Escolitídeo/Curitiba e Marques/Carrano/Abreu, instaladas em alturas de 1m; 3 m; 5 m; 7,5 m e 10 m. Os dados de coleta foram avaliados quantitativa e qualitativamente. Dos 7.974 escolitídeos coletados, 4.131 (51,8%) o foram com a armadilha Escolitídeo/Curitíba e 3.843 (48,2 %) com a Marques/Carrano. Os dados revelam a existência de 14 gêneros e 168 espécies. In the present report, we investigate polymorphism in three of the Brazilian species of Chauliognathus Hentz, 1930 (Coleoptera, Cantharidae), by analyzing the geographical color pattern variation of the elytra in C. flavipes, C. fallax and C. octomaculatus. These species belong to the mullerian complex called the "yellow-black". Forensic Entomology research has been concentrated in only a few localities of the "Cerrado" vegetation, the Brazilian Savannah. The present study had, as its objective, an examination of the diversity of arthropod fauna associated with the carcasses of Sus scrofa (Linnaeus) in this biome. The study was conducted during the dry and humid periods in two Cerrado vegetation profiles of the State of Minas Gerais. The decaying process was slower and greater quantities of arthropods were collected during the dry period. Insects represented 99% of 161,116 arthropods collected. Realizou-se um estudo sobre a fauna de artrópodes associada às fezes bovinas em Goiás, de janeiro a dezembro de 1998. O objetivo foi verificar a freqüência dos Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera e Macrochelidae (Acarina) considerados importantes no processo de degradação das fezes bovinas nas pastagens e no controle de Diptera. Vinte placas fecais bovinas foram coletadas aleatoriamente, a cada mês, com oito dias de idade, colocadas em recipientes plásticos e levadas ao laboratório. Os artrópodes foram obtidos pelo método de flutuação em água. Foram coletados 52 espécies de artrópodes em 10 famílias, incluindo, 24 Coleoptera (três famílias), 12 Diptera (três famílias), 10 Hymenoptera (três famílias) e seis Macrochelidae (Acarina).

Realizou-se um estudo sobre a fauna de artrópodes associados a fezes de aves poedeiras em granja do estado de São Paulo, de janeiro de 2001 a dezembro de 2002. O objetivo foi verificar a freqüência de dípteros e coleópteros coletados por meio do funil de Berlese e pelo método de flutuação, além de correlacionar os métodos de coletas e a possível sazonalidade dos mesmos ao longo das estações. Das setenta e cinco coletas realizadas, capturaram-se 29.499 artrópodes, sendo 16.702 Diptera (seis famílias) e 12.797 Coleoptera (quatro famílias). Algumas espécies de artrópodes apresentaram relação direta entre o método de coleta, as estações do ano e a precipitação pluvial, com aumento significativo do número de insetos coletados em determinadas épocas do ano.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar os aspectos biológicos de Harmonia axyridis, alimentada com duas espécies de presas, e a ocorrência de predação intraguilda com Eriopis connexa. Larvas de H. axyridis foram alimentadas diariamente com ovos de Anagasta kuehniella ou com o pulgão Schizaphis graminum. Adultos da joaninha foram separados em dez casais que receberam o mesmo tipo de alimento da fase larval. Na avaliação da predação, uma larva de quarto instar de cada espécie foi mantida na presença ou ausência de abrigo e de ovos de A. kuehniella. A fase larval de H. axyridis durou 10,2 e 8,9 dias, quando alimentada com A. kuehniella e S. graminum, respectivamente. A sobrevivência do predador, em fase imatura, variou de 70 a 100%.
